learns that the world is not as small as she thought it was The Scent Keeper seems to be divided into three parts The part Emmeline spends on the island with her father, the time she spends with Henry and Claudia living in The Cove, and the time she spends in the big city which I think is Vancouver hunting for Fisher and her mother I enjoyed the first part the most, and also somewhat enjoyed the second, but the book got progressively less interesting for me as it went on At its heart, The Scent Keeper is a coming of age novel, and though I enjoyed parts of it, and I think the author writes well enough, I didn t much care for the evolution of Emmeline s character I will say that I think this book has a lot of crossover potential as Emmeline is a child and a teen throughout the novel, and it covers themes and topics of interest to young adults. The other complaint I have is that I was super underwhelmed by the ending to the point that I almost don t think the author knew how to end the book It just kind of stopped, and there was not the kind of conclusion I would have hoped for. This book definitely does have one of my favorite covers of 2019 though Thanks to the publisher for would be no different.Emmeline lives an almost fairy tale life She grew up on a tiny, practically uninhabited island with her father This reminded me a bit of Swiss Family Robinson in a way, because no matter how beautiful and charmed that life may be it will get lonely eventually.Emmeline s father chose this solitary life after all, not Emmeline. In their rustic little cabin, Emmeline s father has a collection of glass bottles designed to hold a scent inside. Each bottle has a slip of fabric and a scent is contained in the fabric.Imagine being able to forever capture the scent of your grandmother s house or Christmas morning.During the days, they forage for food In the evenings, they read together And when the tide comes in, the mermaids throw a party and bring gifts for Emmeline. But one day Emmeline doesn t keep her promise to stay away from the beach and what she discovers causes a rift in her relationship with her father. It also sets into motion something so upsetting that Emmeline wants to leave the island.Life off the island is not an easy adjustment Picture a young girl who was raised practically wild She was raised to train her sense of smell and she had incredible skills But these aren t skills that get get far when she s required to start school Needless to say, the majority of the kids do not make it easy for her.She forms a bond with one boy her age, they are connected by the fact that they are different She s not sure why but she knows he s not just like the other kids And he is kind to her.As the years pass, Emmeline continues to question what exactly her father was trying to accomplish with his scent collection.I thought this wax beautifully writing I love the language, I love the descriptions, I love the magical realism side to it all The details given to the scent portion of the storyline are just gorgeous And I felt that the novel answered any lingering questions we might have had by the end.Why did I give it four stars instead of five Entirely because of my own personal bias against certain storylines Here s the only spoiler I ll say, there are animals in this book that die and one in a rather heartbreaking way I m pretty tender hearted myself and it s hard for me to read that flag Like see review Dec 11, 2018 Cynthia rated it it was amazing Reading this wonderful book has given me a peak into a fascinating
