    • It is truly frustrating to the extreme to come across a very much magical and wonderful adaptation (retelling) of a well-known fairy tale and then be forced to deduct a number of stars, simply due to a (for me at least) glaring and academically problematic and annoying omission (and one that could have so easily have been avoided at that).Tony Johnston's The Cowboy and the Black-Eyed Pea appears to be a Texas adaptation of the well-known Princess and the Pea fairytale which was of course origina [...]

    • Probably my favorite children's book retelling of the Princess and the Pea so far. This is the story of a bodacious beauty trying to find herself a real cowboywith a pea under his saddle bag! Charming and fun!

    • I'm going to give Johnston the benefit of the doubt and assume he didn't realize that Hans Christian Andersen wrote the original. I didn't; I love it and had always assumed it was 'traditional' (anonymous and iconographic). So maybe Johnston and I both learned something.I adore this version, with the strong female lead and the updated setting. I do wonder though if the MC's new husband is actually capable of helping her manage the spread. Maybe he can be a house-husband and do the cooking & [...]

    • I'm not quite sure what to think of this story, which is a more old-westernized take on the original Princess and the Pea. While the pictures and the story itself are humorous, I don't know what it would be teaching my children; the very idea that a "true" cowboy can be determined by his sensitivity to what's under his saddle, and that this makes him marriage material, borders on the ridiculous. The fact, however, that many may pretend to be something they're not is a lesson that is important to [...]

    • These Texas fractured fairy tales don't end. This one was great. I love some of the little jokes that children might not get. But it's enjoyable for all ages and will be perfect for the Book Time. Poor cowboy--I felt bad for him!

    • This is wild-west retelling of the Princess and the Pea. It is a great story about female independence and choosing a mate based on his virtues and not just the first one who comes along. It is a longer story, but one I would recommend to anyone interested in fairy tales or the wild west.

    • I loved this book. This is the first time I have ever read this book or even heard of it. What a cute story. A father leaves his daughter some advice before he passes away and she takes it to heart when searching for a husband. Its a stilly story, but very enjoyable.

    • A western style story to the "Princess and the Pea". It was fun to put a southern accent in it while reading it out loud to the kids.

    • Hilarious retelling of the princess and the pea but with a enterprising young woman who uses a pea to determine who is the real cowboy!

    • Western-flavored Princess and the Pea variant. The rancher's daughter, Farethee Well, is looking for a real cowboy.
